Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 114
Verse 8 of 16

The One Rules Even the Last Breath

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥
har jee-o kee hai sabh sirkaaraa.
The Dear Lord is the Ruler above all.
ਏਹੁ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥
ayhu jam ki-aa karay vichaaraa.
What can this wretched Messenger of Death do?
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਢਦਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
hukmee bandaa hukam kamaavai hukmay kadh-daa saahaa hay. ||8||
As slave to the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the mortal acts according to His Hukam. According to His Hukam, he is deprived of his breath. ||8||

In plain words

The One is the gentle Ruler over everything, even over endings.

So the fear of the last breath has no power of its own.

Everything moves in the flow of the One — even the moment the breath returns home is held safely in that flow.

Even the last breath is held safely in the flow of the One.
The deeper layer

Har jee-o kee hai sabh sirkaaraa — the One rules over all. Ayhu jam ki-aa karay vichaaraa: the Messenger of Death is a powerless servant under the hukam, and nothing frightening has authority of its own. The last breath is hukmay, part of the same safe flow of existence, gently framed as returning home.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel that even scary things are held by something bigger?
