Verse 2 of 16

The Breath You Set Beating in Me

vaajai pa-un tai aap vajaa-ay.
You Yourself vibrate the beat of the breath.
siv saktee dayhee meh paa-ay.
Shiva and Shakti, energy and matter - You have placed them into the body.
gur parsaadee ultee hovai gi-aan ratan sabad taahaa hay. ||2||
By Guru's Grace, one turns away from the world, and attains the jewel of spiritual wisdom, and the Word of the Shabad. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The very rhythm of my breath is Your doing; You keep it moving without my asking.

Energy and stillness, the push and the calm, You wove them both into me.

By the Guru's grace I turn around toward You, and a hidden jewel of understanding shines, and the Word settles in my heart.

The One who set my breath beating also placed wisdom within me to find.
The deeper layer

Shiva and Shakti here stand for energy and matter, the raw pair of existence, both placed within the human frame. The turn toward the One is a reorientation to the inner jewel, opened by grace rather than force.

A Question to Sit With

When does slowing your breath help you feel steadier?
