Know Yourself and Know Every Virtue

aap pachhaanai so sabh gun jaanai.
One who realizes himself, knows all virtues.
gur kai sabad har naam vakhaanai.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he chants the Name of the Lord.
an-din naam rataa din raatee maa-i-aa moh chukaahaa hay. ||8||
Night and day, he remains imbued with the Naam, day and night; he is rid of emotional attachment to Maya. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who knows their own heart comes to know every good thing.

Keeping the Name close all through the day and night, the tight grip of clinging quietly loosens.

Knowing yourself is where all the good things begin.
The deeper layer

Self-knowledge is the root of virtue. Steady remembrance, simran, loosens attachment naturally, without struggle.

A Question to Sit With

What good quality do you most want to grow in yourself?
