Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 117
Verse 12 of 16

Leaving the Treasure to Wander Outside

ghar vath chhodeh baahar Dhaaveh.
Those who forsake the object within their own hearts, wander outside.
manmukh anDhay saad na paavahi.
The blind, self-willed manmukhs do not taste the flavor of God.
an ras raatee rasnaa feekee bolay har ras mool na taahaa hay. ||12||
Imbued with the taste of another, their tongues speak tasteless, insipid words. They never taste the sublime essence of the Lord. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some leave the treasure sitting inside them and go searching everywhere outside instead.

Filling up on lesser flavors, their words turn flat, because they have not yet tasted the sweetness of the One waiting at home.

The sweetest taste is the one waiting inside you.
The deeper layer

Ghar vath chhodeh baahar dhaaveh — the treasure at home is left behind for wandering outside. The wandering heart has not yet come home, and home is still waiting.

A Question to Sit With

What is something close to home you sometimes overlook?
