Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 117
Verse 11 of 16

Reading Much, Missing the Heart

bayd parheh parh baad vakaaneh.
He reads and studies the Vedas, and argues about them;
ghat meh barahm tis sabad na pachhaaneh.
God is within his own heart, but he does not recognize the Word of the Shabad.
gurmukh hovai so tat bilovai rasnaa har ras taahaa hay. ||11||
One who becomes Gurmukh churns the essence of reality; his tongue savors the sublime essence of the Lord. ||11||

In plain words

A person can read many holy books and still spend the time arguing, missing the One who lives right inside them.

The Guru's people quietly stir the meaning, the way you churn milk into butter, and their tongues taste the sweetness of the One.

Reading a lot is not the same as tasting the meaning.
The deeper layer

The fault lies in arguing over texts while missing their point. Churning, bilovana, is patient inner practice that yields the butter of realization.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between knowing about something and understanding it?
