Verse 5 of 16

True Words, True Seeing

gurmukh sach bainee gurmukh sach nainee.
True is the speech of the Gurmukh; true are the eyes of the Gurmukh.
gurmukh sach kamaavai karnee.
The Gurmukh practices and lives the Truth.
sad hee sach kahai din raatee avraa sach kahaa-idaa. ||5||
He speaks the Truth forever, day and night, and inspires others to speak the Truth. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When your heart is honest, your words ring true and even your eyes look out kindly and clear.

Living by truth all day and night, you help others find their own honest voice.

An honest heart helps others find their honest voice too.
The deeper layer

Truth pervades speech, sight, and action. The truthful person becomes contagious, inspiring truth in others, so this is a social ethic as much as a private one.

A Question to Sit With

Who in your life makes it easier for you to tell the truth?
