Verse 14 of 16

Air, Water, Fire, and What Rules Within

ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ॥
pa-un paanee hai baisantar.
Air, water and fire make up the body.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ॥
maa-i-aa moh vartai sabh antar.
Emotional attachment to Maya rules deep within all.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
jin keetay jaa tisai pachhaaneh maa-i-aa moh chukaa-idaa. ||14||
When one realizes the One who created him, emotional attachment to Maya is dispelled. ||14||

In plain words

Air and water and warmth come together to make this body of yours.

A strong pull toward things can rule inside it, but the moment you know the One who made you, that pull loosens its grip.

Knowing the One who made you loosens the grip of clinging.
The deeper layer

The body is made of air, water and fire. The pull of attachment rules inside, until we know our Maker.

Pa-un paanee hai baisantar: air, water and fire make up the body. Baisantar means fire, the warmth that keeps us alive. It is a wonder to think about. We are made of the same stuff as wind and rain and sunlight.

Maa-i-aa moh vartai sabh antar: moh, clinging to Maya, the passing things of the world, rules inside everyone. Think of a magnet pulling on bits of metal. The things of the world pull on the mind the same way.

Jin keetay jaa tisai pachhaaneh: when one truly knows the One who made them, that pull lets go.

A Question to Sit With

Is it not amazing that you are made of air, water, and warmth?
