Verse 5 of 7

When Pride Makes Us Forget What Matters

ha-umai jali-aa manhu visaaray.
Burnt by egotism, one forgets the Lord from his mind.
jam pur vajeh kharhag karaaray.
In the City of Death, he is attacked with massive swords.
ab kai kahi-ai naam na mil-ee too saho jee-arhay bhaaree jee-o. ||4||
Then, even if he asks for it, he will not receive the Lord's Name; O soul, you shall suffer terrible punishment. ||4||

In plain words

When pride takes over, it is easy to forget the One and the calm that comes with remembering.

Living only from that heat leaves the heart restless and unsettled.

So it is kind to myself to remember now, gently, while the remembering is easy.

Pride makes us forget; gentle remembering, now, is the kind way back.
The deeper layer

Haumai (ego) burns, and in its heat the One slips from the mind. In the fierce picture of the City of Death and its swords, that forgetting grows heavy and hard to undo. The invitation is to remember now, in tenderness, while remembering is easy.

A Question to Sit With

When pride flares up in you, what helps you come back to what matters?
