ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਪਵਹਿ ਖਿਆਲੀ ॥
maa-i-aa mamtaa paveh khi-aalee.
You are distracted by thoughts of Maya and worldly attachment.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਫਾਸਹਿਗਾ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੀ ॥
jam pur faashigaa jam jaalee.
In the City of Death, you will be caught by the noose of the Messenger of Death.

hayt kay banDhan torh na saakeh taa jam karay khu-aaree jee-o. ||5||
You cannot break free from the bondage of loving attachment, and so the Messenger of Death will torture you. ||5||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
It is easy to get pulled this way and that by chasing thoughts.
Clinging too tightly ties little knots in the heart that are hard to undo alone.
But knots can always be loosened, and reaching for help is how they come untied.
Clinging ties knots in the heart, but knots can always be gently undone.
Maa-i-aa mamtaa, the pull of things and of clinging, fills the mind with chasing thoughts. Het kay bandhan, the knots of clinging, bind the heart as tightly as Yama's noose. Knots are not crimes; they are simply loosened, often with help, and that help is the Guru's gift of the Naam.
A Question to Sit With
What is something you are holding a little too tightly right now?
