Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 12
Verse 7 of 7

It Was All Grace, and I Rest in It

naa ha-o kartaa naa mai kee-aa.
I have done nothing; I am doing nothing now.
amrit naam satgur dee-aa.
The True Guru has blessed me with the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam.
jis too deh tisai ki-aa chaaraa naanak saran tumaaree jee-o. ||6||1||12||
What other efforts can anyone make, when You bestow Your blessing? Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary. ||6||1||12||

In plain words

When I look honestly, I see I did not earn any of this on my own.

The Guru placed the sweet Naam in my heart like a gift.

Nanak says: when You do the giving, there is nothing left to strive for; I rest in Your shelter.

When grace does the giving, your part is simply to rest in it.
The deeper layer

Everything rests in pure grace: naa hau kartaa, I am not the doer. The amrit naam is received, not achieved; the only effort is resting in the shelter (saran) that was always open. This is Gurprasad, grace, and the knots of clinging come undone right here.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift in your life you did not earn but can be grateful for?
