Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 121
Verse 9 of 16

Setting Down the Ledger of Accounts

ganat ganai so jalai sansaaraa.
One who calculates his accounts, burns in the world.
sahsaa mool na chukai vikaaraa.
His skepticism and corruption are never dispelled.
gurmukh hovai so ganat chukaa-ay sachay sach samaa-idaa. ||9||
One who becomes Gurmukh abandons his calculations; through Truth, we merge in the True Lord. ||9||

In plain words

A heart forever tallying who owes what stays restless and unsettled.

Setting down that endless ledger, the heart that faces the One touches what is true and melts into the True.

A heart forever keeping score stays restless; setting the ledger down brings peace.
The deeper layer

Keeping accounts of who owes what is an anxious way to live, and it leaves the heart restless. Setting the ledger down opens the way to union with the True One.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt lighter after stopping keeping score with someone?
