Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 122
Verse 16 of 16

Free While Fully Alive

ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
aapay karay karaa-ay kartaa.
The Creator Himself acts, and inspires all to act.
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥
sabad marai so-ee jan muktaa.
He alone is liberated, who dies in the Word of the Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੫॥੧੯॥
naanak naam vasai man antar naamo naam Dhi-aa-idaa. ||16||5||19||
O Nanak, the Naam dwells deep within the mind; meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||16||5||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Creator acts, and moves everyone to act. The one who lets the old, small self grow quiet inside the Word becomes free — free while fully alive.

Nanak says, the Naam lives deep in the heart; keep it there, and let it fill you.

The freest people are the ones whose small self has grown quiet.
The deeper layer

Sabad marai — dying in the Shabad — means the ego growing quiet while the body lives on. This is jeevan-mukti: liberation while fully alive. In the closing Nanak line, the Naam dwells within as the steady center.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to let the loud, grabbing part of you rest for a while?
