The Ache of Forgetting

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਤਿਨੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
satgur tay vichhurhay tinee dukh paa-i-aa.
Those who are separated from the True Guru, suffer in misery.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
an-din maaree-ah dukh sabaa-i-aa.
Night and day, they are punished, and they suffer in total agony.
ਮਥੇ ਕਾਲੇ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
mathay kaalay mahal na paavahi dukh hee vich dukh paa-idaa. ||5||
Their faces are blackened, and they do not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. They suffer in sorrow and agony. ||5||

In plain words

When someone drifts far from the True Guru, they carry an ache inside — a heaviness that seems to follow them through the day.

They keep looking for home and cannot quite feel it, and the sorrow doubles back on itself. But no one is shut out forever; the door home is always there, waiting for the moment we turn back toward it.

The ache of forgetting is a signpost pointing you home.
The deeper layer

Drifting away from the Guru brings an ache.

Satgur tay vichhurhay tinee dukh paa-i-aa — those cut off from the True Guru feel pain. The verse uses very strong pictures here. It speaks of being punished day and night, of faces blackened with shame, of sorrow upon sorrow. Dukh hee vich dukh paa-idaa — pain inside of pain.

These pictures show how heavy it feels to be far from home. Think of being lost in a big store as a little kid. Every aisle looks wrong. Nothing feels safe.

But the ache is a signpost, not a sentence handed down. It points the way back home. And the way home is always there, waiting for the moment we turn toward it.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you find your way back when you feel far from what matters?
