Verse 13 of 16

Everyone Is Longing for This

naavai no lochai jaytee sabh aa-ee.
Everyone who comes into the world, longs for the Name.
naa-o tinaa milai Dhur purab kamaa-ee.
They alone are blessed with the Name, whose past actions were so ordained by the Primal Lord.
jinee naa-o paa-i-aa say vadbhaagee gur kai sabad milaa-idaa. ||13||
Those who obtain the Name are very fortunate. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they are united with God. ||13||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Every person who comes into the world is quietly longing for the Name, even when they do not have the words for it.

Those whose path has been readied receive it. How fortunate they are — the Guru's Word joins them to the One.

The longing you cannot quite name may be a longing for the One.
The deeper layer

Everyone who comes into the world longs for the Name, whether or not they can name the longing. Those whose past has readied them (dhur purab kamaa-ee) receive it — a gentle reading of karma as ground already prepared.

A Question to Sit With

What is a longing in you that is hard to put into words?
