Verse 14 of 16

Grace Opens the Door to Service

bin bhaagaa gur sayvi-aa na jaa-ay.
Without good destiny, no one can serve the True Guru.
manmukh bhoolay mu-ay billaa-ay.
The self-willed manmukhs are deluded, and die weeping and wailing.
jin ka-o nadar hovai gur kayree har jee-o aap milaa-idaa. ||14||
Those who are blessed by the Guru's Glance of Grace - the Dear Lord unites them with Himself. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Serving the Guru comes by grace; grace opens the door to it. When we turn away, we can wander confused and sorrowful.

But a single kind glance from the Guru is enough — and the Beloved gathers us in.

One kind glance of grace can open a door that effort could not.
The deeper layer

Grace opens the door to serving the Guru, and turning away leaves a person lost and sorrowful. The turning point is nadar — the Guru's single glance of grace — which is all it takes.

A Question to Sit With

When has one kind moment from someone changed the whole shape of your day?
