Knowing Yourself

jin man vich vath paa-ee so-ee jaanai.
He alone knows, who has placed the object within his mind.
gur kai sabday aap pachhaanai.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he comes to understand himself.
aap pachhaanai so-ee jan nirmal banee sabad sunaa-idaa. ||10||
That humble being who understands himself is immaculate. He proclaims the Guru's Bani, and the Word of the Shabad. ||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who has the treasure planted in their mind is the one who knows. Through the Guru's Word, they come to understand their own self.

And the person who understands themselves grows clear and clean inside, and shares the song with others.

Knowing yourself and knowing the One turn out to be one knowing.
The deeper layer

Self-knowledge (aap pachhaanai) is the fruit here: the one who understands the self becomes nirmal (pure) and naturally proclaims the Bani. Knowing the One and knowing oneself turn out to be the same knowing.

A Question to Sit With

What is something true about yourself that you are just beginning to understand?
