Verse 13 of 16

The Great Giver Simply Gives

ਸਚਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਸਚੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
sachaa mahal sachay bhandaaraa.
True is the Lord's Mansion, and True is His treasure.
ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
aapay dayvai dayvanhaaraa.
The Great Giver Himself gives.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ਮਨਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
gurmukh saalaahay sukh-daatay man maylay keemat paa-idaa. ||13||
The Gurmukh praises the Giver of peace; his mind is united with the Lord, and he comes to know His worth. ||13||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The palace is true, and so is its treasure. The Great Giver gives, all on its own, asking nothing.

The one turned toward the teaching sings the praise of the peace-giver, and their mind, joined to the One, comes to know how precious it is.

The Great Giver gives freely; the gift is only to open to it.
The deeper layer

The mahal (Mansion) and its treasure are sachaa (true, lasting). The dayvanhaaraa (the Giver) gives freely; the Gurmukh, singing praise, comes to know the One's worth (keemat) from the inside.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift you have received that you could never have paid for?
