Verse 9 of 16

The Trap of Puffing Yourself Up

manmukh bahut karay abhimaan.
The self-willed manmukhs take great pride in themselves.
dargeh kab hee na paavai maan.
In the Court of the Lord, they are never honored.
doojai laagay janam gavaa-i-aa bin boojhay dukh paa-idaa. ||9||
Attached to duality, they waste their lives; without understanding, they suffer in pain. ||9||

In plain words

When I get puffed up with pride in myself, that swagger never wins me a place in the truest home.

Pulled this way and that, the days can slip by unlived. But pride is just a knot to be loosened, gently — and the way to loosen it is always near.

Pride is not a crime to punish but a knot to loosen.
The deeper layer

Pride (abhimaan) wins no honor in the Court, and a life pulled two ways slips by. Pride is a knot that can be loosened, and haumai is a sickness of the mind that can heal.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your pride soften when it puffs up?
