tuDhuno sayveh jo tuDh bhaaveh.
He alone serves You, who pleases You.
gur kai sabday sach samaaveh.
Through the Guru's Shabad, he merges in the True Lord.
an-din gun raveh din raatee rasnaa har ras bhaa-i-aa. ||2||
Night and day, he chants the Lord's Praises, day and night; his tongue savors and delights in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The one who delights You is the one who ends up serving You. Through the Guru's Word they melt into the True One.
Day and night they sing Your praise, and it is as if their tongue tastes something wonderfully sweet.
Praise, done with love, has a sweetness of its own.
Service flows from pleasing the One (tudh bhaaveh), not from strain. The tongue savoring the ras (essence) of praise is a sensory image: remembrance tastes sweet, and the sweetness keeps it going.
A Question to Sit With
