Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 129
Verse 11 of 16

Service Without the Show

vich ha-umai sayvaa thaa-ay na paa-ay.
One who serves in egotism is not accepted or approved.
janam marai fir aavai jaa-ay.
Such a person is born, only to die again, and come and go in reincarnation.
so tap pooraa saa-ee sayvaa jo har mayray man bhaanee hay. ||11||
Perfect is that penance and that service, which is pleasing to the Mind of my Lord. ||11||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Service done in the me-first feeling is not accepted. Such a person is born and dies, and keeps coming and going.

The perfect discipline and the perfect service are the ones that please my Lord's mind.

The service that counts is the service that pleases the One.
The deeper layer

Vich ha-umai sayvaa thaa-ay na paa-ay — service done from ego is not accepted, and the round of birth and death goes on. So tap pooraa — the whole discipline, the whole service, is the one that pleases the One.

A Question to Sit With

Can you tell when you are helping to look good versus helping from the heart?
