Verse 3 of 6

Loosening the Grip of I Did It All Myself

ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪਸ ਤੇ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਏਈ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥
buraa bhalaa kichh aapas tay jaani-aa ay-ee sagal vikaaraa.
He thinks that good and bad deeds come from himself; this is the source of all evil.
ਇਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਹੋਆ ਵਰਤੈ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
ih furmaa-i-aa khasam kaa ho-aa vartai ih sansaaraa. ||2||
Whatever happens in this world is only by the Order of our Lord and Master. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I believe every good and bad thing comes only from my own doing, my ego grows heavy.

Much more is woven through life than my small self alone.

Trusting the larger flow lightens the load I try to carry all by myself.

You are not carrying the whole world alone; trust lightens the load.
The deeper layer

The teaching targets haumai, the ego's claim to be the sole doer, which Guru Amar Das calls the root of vikaar (trouble). Seeing that the whole play unfolds by the One's order is humility, not fatalism: it loosens the exhausting belief that everything rests on you. It never means excusing harm; it means setting down false, isolating pride.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you try to control alone that you could hold more lightly?
