The One Who Lifts the Lowly

sultaan khaan karay khin keeray.
The sultans and nobles are reduced to dust in an instant.
gareeb nivaaj karay parabh meeray.
God cherishes the poor, and makes them into rulers.
garab nivaaran sarab saDhaaran kichh keemat kahee na jaa-ee hay. ||4||
He is the Destroyer of egotistical pride, the Support of all. His value cannot be estimated. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In a single moment, the One can make kings and rulers as small as ants.

And the One cherishes the poor and makes them rulers. That One clears away our pride and holds everyone up — no one can put a price on that One.

Pride does not last, but the One lifts up whoever the world overlooks.
The deeper layer

sultaan khaan karay khin keeray — in a moment, kings and nobles become as small as ants. gareeb nivaaj — the One cherishes the overlooked and raises them. garab nivaaran (destroyer of pride) and sarab sadhaaran (support of all) name the great leveling: the world's rankings are undone by grace.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think the world so often overlooks the wrong people?
