Verse 5 of 15

Where the Sweetness Finally Comes

saglay karam Dharam jug saaDhaa.
All sorts of religious rituals are performed in this age,
bin har ras sukh til nahee laaDhaa.
but without the sublime essence of the Lord, not an iota of peace is found.
bha-ee kirpaa naanak satsangay ta-o Dhan pir anand ulaasaa hay. ||5||
When the Lord becomes Merciful, O Nanak, then in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, the bride and the husband enjoy ecstasy and bliss. ||5||

In plain words

People try all kinds of ceremonies and routines, in every age.

But without the sweetness of the One, not even a speck of peace is found. Nanak says: when grace comes, in the Sangat, body and spark share joy and delight.

Routines alone do not bring peace; the sweetness of the One does.
The deeper layer

saglay karam dharam — all sorts of rituals in every age — bring no peace without har ras, the sweet essence of the One. Empty ritual in any tradition is meant, not any one people.

Fulfillment comes through grace and satsang — the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between going through the motions and meaning something?
