Verse 8 of 15

Here As Long As I Am Meant To Be

pir kahi-aa ha-o hukmee bandaa.
The soul-husband says, "I am the slave of my Commander.
oh bhaaro thaakur jis kaan na chhandaa.
He is my Great Lord and Master, who is fearless and independent.
jichar raakhai tichar tum sang rahnaa jaa saday ta ooth siDhaasaa hay. ||8||
As long as He wills, I will remain with you. When He summons me, I shall arise and depart."||8||

In plain words

The living spark answers: I am a servant of the Command. My Master is great, fearless, and answers to no one.

As long as the Master keeps me here, I will stay with you. When the Master calls me, I will rise and go.

The living spark stays as long as it is kept, then answers the Master's call.
The deeper layer

hukmee bandaa — the soul serves the hukam, the Command. jichar raakhai tichar rahnaa (I stay as long as I am kept); jaa saday ta ooth sidhaasaa (when called, I rise and go). The leaving is a call answered, the way a servant answers the Master.

A Question to Sit With

Can something be sad and peaceful at the same time?
