Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 132
Verse 9 of 17

Everyone Is a Receiver at Your Door

ਜਾਚਹਿ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਬਨਵਾਸੀ ॥
jaacheh siDh saaDhik banvaasee.
The Siddhas, seekers and forest-dwellers beg from You.
ਜਾਚਹਿ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ॥
jaacheh jatee satee sukhvaasee.
The celibates and abstainers, and those who abide in peace beg from You.
ik daataar sagal hai jaachik deh daan saristeejaa hay. ||9||
You alone are the Great Giver; all are beggars of You. You bless all the world with Your gifts. ||9||

In plain words

The seekers and wanderers, the disciplined and the peaceful — every one of them asks at Your door.

You alone are the Giver, and all of us ask. You give Your gifts to the whole wide world.

However holy anyone is, everyone receives from the one Giver.
The deeper layer

Everyone, even the holiest person, asks for gifts at the same door.

The verse lists holy people of many paths. Sidh are people with great spiritual powers. Saadhik are seekers in training. Banvaasee live in the forest. Jatee and satee keep strict self-control and pure lives. And some simply live in peace. All of them ask the One for gifts.

Ik daataar sagal hai jaachik: there is one Giver, and everyone else receives. Think of a school lunch line. The principal, the teachers and the kids all hold out their trays at the same counter. However holy anyone is, all alike receive.

A Question to Sit With

What might change if you saw everyone — even the great — as receiving, like you?
