Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 138
Verse 14 of 16

Only One Thing to Ask

jaachak jaachai tumeh araaDhai.
The beggar begs, and worships You in adoration.
patit paavan pooran parabh saaDhai.
You are the Purifier of the sinners, O Perfectly Holy Lord God.
ayko daan sarab sukh gun niDh aan mangan nihkinchnaa. ||14||
Please bless me with this one gift, O treasure of all bliss and virtue; I do not ask for anything else. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Here I am, asking, and loving You while I ask.

You are the One who makes the fallen whole again, complete and kind.

So give me just this one gift, You who hold every joy and every good thing: I am not asking for anything else.

Ask the One for one gift, and nothing else.
The deeper layer

'Patit paavan', the One who makes the fallen pure, is the One who makes the fallen whole. Every wish narrows down to one gift, and 'nihkinchnaa', nothing else is asked.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing, what would it be?
