Aboard the Boat Together

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਜਪਿ ਬੋਹਿਥਿ ਚਰੀਐ ॥

Meditating on Your lotus feet, I have come aboard Your boat.

Joining the Society of the Saints, I cross over the world-ocean.
ਅਰਚਾ ਬੰਦਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਮਤ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਨੰਗਨਾ ॥੫॥
archaa bandan har samat nivaasee baahurh jon na nangnaa. ||5||
My flower-offering and worship is to realize that the Lord is dwelling alike in all; I shall not be reincarnated naked again. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I hold onto the One like climbing aboard a strong boat.

Joining the Sangat, I cross the wide ocean.

My offering and my worship is to see that the same One lives in everyone. Then I am not born again, bare and lost.

Nobody crosses deep water alone; you cross it together.
The deeper layer

The boat and the world-ocean are standard images for crossing safely together. The closing 'baahurh jon na nangnaa' means not coming into the world again bare and lost; the one who sees the One in all has found a home.

The 'satsang' here is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people turning the same good direction as you?
