Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 141
Verse 8 of 15

Only One Gate Lasts

dil meh jaanhu sabh filhaalaa.
You must know in your heart that everything is temporary.
khilkhaanaa biraadar hamoo janjaalaa.
Family, household and siblings are all entanglements.
meer malak umray faanaa-i-aa ayk mukaam khudaa-ay daraa. ||8||
Kings, rulers and nobles are mortal and transitory; only God's Gate is the permanent place. ||8||

In plain words

Deep down, know that everything here is passing through.

Family, home, and the people around us are all threads we are tangled in for a while.

Kings and rulers and great lords all come and go, and only the doorway of the One stays for good.

Loving what passes is fine; just remember what stays.
The deeper layer

Family, wealth and power all pass, plainly and without dread. 'Ayk mukaam khudaa-ay daraa': the One's door is the one place that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing in your life you hope will still matter in fifty years?
