Verse 7 of 16

Emptied of Endless Wanting

ootam banee gaa-o gopaalaa.
I sing the most Sublime Bani, the Word of the Lord of the Universe.
saaDhsangat kee mangahu ravaalaa.
I beg for the dust of the feet of the Saadh Sangat.
baasan mayt nibaasan ho-ee-ai kalmal saglay jaalkaa. ||7||
Eradicating desire, I have become free of desire; I have burnt away all my sins. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I sing the finest words there are, the words of the Keeper of all.

I ask for the dust under the feet of the Sangat.

As the endless wanting empties out of me, I become free of wanting, and all my wrongs are burned away.

Wanting less is not losing; it is becoming light.
The deeper layer

Wanting empties out, and lightness is left. 'Baasan mayt nibaasan': erase craving and become free of craving. 'Kalmal saglay jaalkaa': every wrong is burned away.

A Question to Sit With

What is one want you would feel lighter without?
