What the True Name Lifts From the Heart

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
jinaa gur nahee bhayti-aa bhai kee naahee bind.
Those who do not meet with the Guru, who have no Fear of God at all,
aavan jaavan dukh ghanaa kaday na chookai chind.
continue coming and going in reincarnation, and suffer terrible pain; their anxiety is never relieved.
kaaparh jivai pachhorhee-ai gharhee muhat gharhee-aal.
They are beaten like clothes being washed on the rocks, and struck every hour like chimes.
naanak sachay naam bin sirahu na chukai janjaal. ||1||
O Nanak, without the True Name, these entanglements are not removed from hanging over one's head. ||1||

In plain words

A heart that never meets the Guru, and never learns to stand in awe, can grow restless and worn.

It keeps circling, tired and unsettled, and its worry does not ease.

Nanak says: the True Name loosens those knots and lifts the weight, so the heart can rest.

The Name does not add a weight; it lifts one.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the Third Mehl. A heart without the Name stays restless, tossed about like laundry on the washing stones, its worry never easing. 'Fear of God' here means awe. The True Name is what lifts the burden and lets the heart rest.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind rest when it has been circling and worrying?
