Searching Three Worlds and Finding Ego the Only Trouble

ਮਃ ੩ ॥
mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਢੂਢੀ ਸਜਣਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਬੁਰੀ ਜਗਤਿ ॥
taribhavan dhoodhee sajnaa ha-umai buree jagat.
I have searched throughout the three worlds, O my friend; egotism is bad for the world.
ਨਾ ਝੁਰੁ ਹੀਅੜੇ ਸਚੁ ਚਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ॥੨॥
naa jhur hee-arhay sach cha-o naanak sacho sach. ||2||
Don't worry, O my soul; speak the Truth, O Nanak, the Truth, and only the Truth. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I looked everywhere, high and low and all around, my friend.

And the one thing that troubles the world, again and again, is the small proud self that forgets it belongs.

Nanak says: do not fret, my soul; speak the Truth, only the Truth, and let it be your home.

Look everywhere and the one trouble that matters turns out to be forgetting you belong.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the Third Mehl. Search all 'three worlds' and one root trouble turns up: haumai (the illusion of being a separate self). Ego is a sickness to be healed, not a crime; the cure offered is reassurance and truthful speech, not self-blame.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt most connected, and least alone in yourself?
