O Nanak, day and night, she is always good; she loves her Beloved Husband Lord. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A life of good conduct, honest self-mastery, and warm belonging is a beautiful thing.
Nanak says: day and night such a heart stays good, because love has taken root.
It loves the Beloved steadily, the way a settled home holds its people.
Lasting goodness is love that has settled in and become a way of living.
A shalok of the First Mehl, the gentle counterpart to the previous one. Where the last named the danger of a neglected heart, this praises the flourishing one: good conduct, true self-discipline (sanjmee), and a 'perfect family' of virtues, all held together by steady love.
A Question to Sit With
What does it feel like when doing good comes easily, not by force?
