Belonging Wholly to the One, Here and Hereafter

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ਸਸੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਕੰਤ ਕੀ ਕੰਤੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ॥
sasurai pay-ee-ai kant kee kant agamm athaahu.
In her father-in-law's home hereafter, and in her parents' home in this world, she belongs to her Husband Lord. Her Husband is inaccessible and unfathomable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੋੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਜੋ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ॥੨॥
naanak Dhan sohaaganee jo bhaaveh vayparvaah. ||2||
O Nanak, she is the happy soul-bride, who is pleasing to her carefree, independent Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In this home and in whatever comes after, my heart belongs to the One.

The Beloved is deep beyond reach and past all measuring, yet wholly mine and I wholly theirs.

Nanak says: happy is the heart that pleases the carefree, free One, and rests in that belonging.

You belong to the One in every home you will ever have.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl. A bride is at home in both her houses, her parents' home and her new family's home; in the same way, the soul belongs to the One everywhere. The One is inaccessible and unfathomable yet also 'carefree and independent' (vayparvaah, beyond need), and the happy soul is the one who is pleasing to that One.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel most like you belong?
