Love and affection, O Nanak, are in the accounts placed before the Creator. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Live by the Hukam of the One who commands; in the True Court, only Truth is accepted.
Do not lose yourself just because the passing world is dazzling to look at.
The one who keeps gentle watch over their heart and keeps it pure is a saintly devotee. Nanak says: love and affection are what count before the Creator.
What is finally counted is not your show but your love.
A shalok of the First Mehl. 'Submit to the Will' here means flowing with the Hukam. The dervish (saintly devotee) keeps watch over the heart and keeps it pure. Before the Creator, the account that counts is love and affection, more than any outward performance.
A Question to Sit With
How do you keep gentle watch over your own heart?
