Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 144
Verse 47 of 69

Every Sense Drenched in the Beloved

mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ha-o mu-aa mai maari-aa pa-un vahai daree-aa-o.
In egotism, he dies; possessiveness kills him, and the breath flows out like a river.
tarisnaa thakee naankaa jaa man rataa naa-ay.
Desire is exhausted, O Nanak, only when the mind is imbued with the Name.
lo-in ratay lo-inee kannee surat samaa-ay.
His eyes are imbued with the eyes of the Lord, and his ears ring with celestial consciousness.
jeebh rasaa-in choonrhee ratee laal lavaa-ay.
His tongue drinks in the sweet nectar, dyed crimson by chanting the Name of the Beloved Lord.
andar musak jhakoli-aa keemat kahee na jaa-ay. ||2||
His inner being is drenched with the Lord's fragrance; his worth cannot be described. ||2||

In plain words

Clinging and grasping wear a person out, and desire drains away like water running off.

Nanak says: when the mind is soaked in the Naam, that endless wanting finally rests.

Then the eyes see with the One's seeing, the ears hum with a deeper music, the tongue tastes sweetness, and the whole being is fragrant beyond describing.

When the heart is soaked in the Name, every sense comes alive to the One.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl. Pride and grasping wear a person down until the breath runs out like a river. Once the mind is imbued with the Naam, desire rests and every sense is drenched in the Beloved: sight, hearing, taste, fragrance.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt so absorbed in something good that all your senses joined in?
