Merit and Demerit, Both From the One Hand

ਮਃ ੩ ॥
mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
ਗੁਣ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਹਹਿ ਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥
gun avgun samaan heh je aap keetay kartaar.
Merits and demerits are the same; they are both created by the Creator.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
naanak hukam mani-ai sukh paa-ee-ai gur sabdee veechaar. ||2||
O Nanak, one who obeys the Hukam of the Lord's Command, finds peace, contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

In plain words

Good and not-so-good alike arise within the one great weave the Creator has made.

Neither is outside the One's care and shaping.

Nanak says: the heart that flows with the Hukam finds peace, resting in the Guru's Word.

Even the tangles of good and bad are held within one larger care.
The deeper layer

A short shalok of the Third Mehl about oneness: even 'merits and demerits' are held within the Creator's single making. Goodness still matters, inside a wider frame. Peace comes from obeying the Hukam and contemplating the Guru's Word.

A Question to Sit With

How might it help to see even your mistakes as part of a bigger whole?
