The Few Who Test the Jewel of the Mind

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
man maanak jin parkhi-aa gur sabdee veechaar.
Some assay their mind-jewel, and contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
say jan virlay jaanee-ahi kaljug vich sansaar.
Only a few of those humble beings are known in this world, in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga.
aapai no aap mil rahi-aa ha-umai dubiDhaa maar.
One's self remains blended with the Lord's Self, when egotism and duality are conquered.
naanak naam ratay dutar taray bha-ojal bikham sansaar. ||2||
O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Naam cross over the difficult, treacherous and terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

In plain words

Some carefully test the jewel of their own mind and turn the Word over in their hearts.

Only a few such people are known in this noisy age.

When pride and the sense of being separate are quieted, one's self blends into the One. Nanak says: those filled with the Naam cross even the roughest waters.

Rare and precious is the one who honestly tests their own heart.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the Third Mehl. 'Assaying the mind-jewel' means examining oneself honestly. Such people are rare in Kali Yuga (the noisy, distracted age). When haumai and duality are conquered, the self merges with the One's Self, and the Naam carries one over the 'difficult, treacherous and terrifying world-ocean'.

A Question to Sit With

What does it look like to honestly examine your own mind?
