pa-orhee.
Pauree:
manmukh andar na bhaalnee muthay ahamtay.
The self-willed manmukhs do not search within their own selves; they are deluded by their egotistical pride.
chaaray kundaaN bhav thakay andar tikh tatay.
Wandering in the four directions, they grow weary, tormented by burning desire within.
simrit saasat na soDhnee manmukh vigutay.
They do not study the Simritees and the Shaastras; the manmukhs waste away and are lost.
bin gur kinai na paa-i-o har naam har satay.
Without the Guru, no one finds the Naam, the Name of the True Lord.
tat gi-aan veechaari-aa har jap har gatay. ||19||
One who contemplates the essence of spiritual wisdom and meditates on the Lord is saved. ||19||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A heart that never looks inside stays fooled by its own proud image.
Wandering out in every direction, it grows tired, burning with wanting.
Without the Guru, no one finds the Naam; contemplating deep wisdom and remembering the One, a heart is saved.
The thing you keep searching outside for is waiting to be found within.
The nineteenth Pauree (||19||). The manmukh's error is not looking within; the restless outward search only wearies. The rescue is inner wisdom and remembrance, found through the Guru. A heart that never turns inward wastes its strength wandering and grows weary.
A Question to Sit With
When you feel restless, does looking inward ever help more than looking out?
