Confused and deluded, I wander around, but no one shows me the way.

I go and ask the clever people, if there is there anyone who can rid me of my pain.

If the True Guru abides within my mind, then I see the Lord, my best friend, there.

O Nanak, my mind is satisfied and fulfilled, contemplating the Praises of the True Name. ||1||

In plain words

Sometimes I feel muddled and lost, and it seems no one can point me the way.

I go and ask the clever ones, is there anyone who can take this ache from me?

But when the True Guru settles in my mind, I see the One right there, my dearest friend. Nanak says: my heart is full, praising the True Name.

The friend you were searching the world for has been waiting inside you.
The deeper layer

A shalok of the First Mehl. The seeker turns first outward, to clever people, for relief from inner pain. The answer is inward: when the Guru abides in the mind, the One is discovered as the closest friend. The satisfaction described is that of a mind that has stopped hunting.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you usually look first when something hurts, outside or inside?
