Verse 11 of 92

Ready, but Not for the Decorations

mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
sayj vichhaa-ee kant koo kee-aa habh seegaar.
I have spread out my bed for You, O my Husband Lord, and applied all my decorations.
itee manjh na samaava-ee jay gal pahiraa haar. ||3||
But even this is not pleasing to me, to wear a garland around my neck. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have made everything ready for You and put on all my finest things.

Yet even this does not satisfy me — the fancy garland means nothing without You.

The meeting matters more than the decorations.
The deeper layer

The soul prepares carefully, then realizes the preparations were never the point. It is the meeting that matters, not the ornaments.

A Question to Sit With

When has getting ready mattered less than who you were waiting for?
