Shelter for the Weary Traveler

ਡਖਣੇ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
dakh-nay mehlaa 5.
Dakhanay, Fifth Mehl:
ਗਹਡੜੜਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਣਿ ਛਾਇਆ ਗਾਫਲ ਜਲਿਓਹੁ ਭਾਹਿ ॥
gehdrharhaa tarin chhaa-i-aa gaafal jali-ohu bhaahi.
He builds a hut of straw, and the fool lights a fire in it.
ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗ ਮਥਾਹੜੈ ਤਿਨ ਉਸਤਾਦ ਪਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
jinaa bhaag mathaaharhai tin ustaad panaahi. ||1||
Only those who have such pre-ordained destiny on their foreheads, find Shelter with the Master. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone builds a little hut of straw, then sets it alight with his own worries.

Those whose hearts are ready find shelter with the Master.

The safest shelter is not one you can accidentally burn down.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok. The straw hut lit by its own owner pictures how ego and anxiety can burn down the small comforts we build. Lasting shelter is found in the One. The 'destiny written on the forehead' is a heart made ready.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go when you need to feel safe?
