O Nanak, he grinds the corn, cooks it and places it before himself.

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: a person grinds the grain, cooks the meal, and sets it out in front of himself.

But without the Guru, he sits waiting for his food to be blessed.

Effort sets the table; gratitude turns it into a feast.
The deeper layer

You can do all the outer work — grinding, cooking, preparing — yet the meal nourishes you fully when it comes with gratitude and the Guru's light. Effort and grace working together.

A Question to Sit With

How does a meal feel different when you are thankful for it?
