The Fly and the Lump of Sweetness

ਮਃ ੫ ॥
mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
ਗਿਲੀ ਗਿਲੀ ਰੋਡੜੀ ਭਉਦੀ ਭਵਿ ਭਵਿ ਆਇ ॥
gilee gilee rodrhee bha-udee bhav bhav aa-ay.
The fly flies around, and comes to the wet lump of molasses.

jo baithay say faathi-aa ubray bhaag mathaa-ay. ||2||
Whoever sits on it, is caught; they alone are saved, who have good destiny on their foreheads. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A little fly buzzes along and lands on a sticky lump of molasses.

Whoever gets stuck there is caught — and the ones with a ready heart lift free.

Some sweet-looking things are stickier than they seem.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok. The sticky sweetness pictures how tempting pleasures can trap; the ready heart does not get glued down. A light warning, told with a smile.

A Question to Sit With

What is something fun that is easy to get too caught up in?
