Sweet No Matter the Pressing

ਮਃ ੫ ॥
mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
ਪਿਰੀਆ ਸੰਦੜੀ ਭੁਖ ਮੂ ਲਾਵਣ ਥੀ ਵਿਥਰਾ ॥
piree-aa sand-rhee bhukh moo laavan thee vithraa.
If my Beloved becomes hungry, I will become food, and place myself before Him.
ਜਾਣੁ ਮਿਠਾਈ ਇਖ ਬੇਈ ਪੀੜੇ ਨਾ ਹੁਟੈ ॥੨॥
jaan mithaa-ee ikh bay-ee peerhay naa hutai. ||2||
I may be crushed, again and again, but like sugarcane, I do not stop yielding sweet juice. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If my Beloved were hungry, I would gladly become the food set before You.

Press me again and again like sugarcane, and still I keep giving up sweet juice.

Lasting sweetness keeps giving, even when life presses hard.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok. Sugarcane gives its sweetness precisely when it is pressed. A picture of love that stays sweet and generous even under hardship — never bitter, no matter the squeeze.

A Question to Sit With

How do you try to stay kind even on a hard day?
