Verse 65 of 92

The Beauty of Truth

ਡਖਣੇ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
dakh-nay mehlaa 5.
Dakhanay, Fifth Mehl:
ਸਚੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਕਾਢੀਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਸੋਇ ॥
sach suhaavaa kaadhee-ai koorhai koorhee so-ay.
The true person is said to be beautiful; false is the reputation of the false.
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਪਲੈ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak virlay jaanee-ahi jin sach palai ho-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, rare are those who have Truth in their laps. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A person of Truth is called beautiful, and what is false earns only a false name.

Nanak says: rare are those who hold Truth close in their laps.

Truth is its own kind of beauty.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok. Sach, Truth, carries its own beauty. The false gets pity more than blame: it simply has no glow of its own, while Truth shines by itself.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt most like your genuine self?
