The One Who Needs Nothing

ਮਃ ੫ ॥
mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
ਆਸਕੁ ਆਸਾ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਮੂ ਮਨਿ ਵਡੀ ਆਸ ॥
aasak aasaa baahraa moo man vadee aas.
The lover is without hope, but within my mind, there is great hope.
ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹਿਕੁ ਤੂ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਗਈਆਸ ॥੨॥
aas niraasaa hik too ha-o bal bal bal ga-ee-aas. ||2||
In the midst of hope, only You, O Lord, remain free of hope; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice, a sacrifice to You. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A heart in love lives on hope, and my heart is brimming with it.

In the middle of all my hoping, only You need nothing at all — and I am given over to You, completely.

The One you can lean on fully is the One who needs nothing back.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok exploring a beautiful paradox: the lover is full of longing, while the Beloved is perfectly complete, needing nothing. The soul gives itself entirely to that fullness. 'Sacrifice' here means glad self-giving, not harm.

A Question to Sit With

Who can you lean on without worrying you are asking too much?
