Even the Word 'Apart' Aches

ਮਃ ੫ ॥
mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਸੁਣੇ ਡੁਖੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਡਿਠੇ ਮਰਿਓਦਿ ॥
vichhorhaa sunay dukh vin dithay mari-od.
Even if I just hear of separation from You, I am in pain; without seeing You, O Lord, I die.
ਬਾਝੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਨਾ ਧੀਰੋਦਿ ॥੩॥
baajh pi-aaray aapnay birhee naa Dheerod. ||3||
Without her Beloved, the separated lover takes no comfort. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Just hearing the word 'separation' makes my heart hurt; without seeing You, something in me fades.

A heart apart from its Beloved finds no comfort anywhere.

Missing someone deeply is a sign of how much they matter.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok of pure viraha, the sweet ache of longing. The ache is strong because the love is strong.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you miss most when they are away?
