One who himself has drowned - how can he carry anyone else across?
ਤਾਰੇਦੜੋ ਭੀ ਤਾਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਰ ਸਿਉ ਰਤਿਆ ॥੧॥
taaraydarho bhee taar naanak pir si-o rati-aa. ||1||
One who is imbued with the Love of the Husband Lord - O Nanak, he himself is saved, and he saves others as well. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone still sinking themselves cannot carry anyone else to shore.

Nanak says: a heart soaked in love for the One floats safely, and helps others float too.

You can help others across once you have found your own footing.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok. A simple, kind truth about helping: you can only lift others once you have found your own footing. Love for the One is the thing that keeps you afloat and able to help.

A Question to Sit With

How can taking care of yourself help you take care of others?
