The Friends Who Never Leave

salok dakh-nay mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Dakhanay, Fifth Mehl:
naanak kachrhi-aa si-o torh dhoodh sajan sant paki-aa.
O Nanak, break away from the false, and seek out the Saints, your true friends.
o-ay jeevanday vichhurheh o-ay mu-i-aa na jaahee chhorh. ||1||
The false shall leave you, even while you are still alive; but the Saints shall not forsake you, even when you are dead. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: loosen your hold on what is false, and seek out the saints, your true friends.

The false leave you even while you live; the saints stay with you through everything, even beyond this life.

True friends are the ones who stay through everything.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok about lasting friendship. What is shallow slips away on its own; the bond with the saints holds through every season, and even past the end of a life.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the friends you know will always be there?
