Let the Small Self Go, and Come Close

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Dakhanay Fifth Mehl:
ਪਹਿਲਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਕਬੂਲਿ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਛਡਿ ਆਸ ॥
pahilaa maran kabool jeevan kee chhad aas.
First, accept death, and give up any hope of life.
ਹੋਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁਕਾ ਤਉ ਆਉ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
hohu sabhnaa kee raynukaa ta-o aa-o hamaarai paas. ||1||
Become the dust of the feet of all, and then, you may come to me. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

First, let the small, grasping self loosen its grip — stop clinging so tightly to everything.

Grow humble enough to honor everyone, and then you are ready to come near to Me.

Loosen the grip of the small self, and there is suddenly room for everyone.
The deeper layer

A Dakhanay shalok about the classic 'die to live' teaching — but the 'death' is the letting-go of ego, not the body. 'Become the dust of the feet of all' is deep humility: seeing yourself as no higher than anyone. That humility is what opens the door.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you hold onto too tightly?
